Berau Forest Carbon Program: Delivering Practical Solutions to Support Development of a National-level REDD Framework in Indonesia
This articles looks at the Forest Carbon Programme in Berau, Indonesia. Main characteristics and design details of the programme are explored; these include emission reduction programmes, community involvement in natural resource governance and management, the provision of information for decision-making, credible carbon accounting, and a realistic financial plan. Furthermore, the article highlights the preliminary project structure, and introduces the various phases of development of the programme. Thus, the article shows that the Berau programme, through its scale, collaborative approach, involvement of multiple layers of government, monitoring systems and comprehensive district-wide strategies, can provide a critical case study for achieving REDD across entire tropical countries.
