Participatory monitoring in tropical forest management: a review of tools, concepts and lessons learned
This book examines recent experiences in participatory monitoring in tropical forest management. It discusses impacts, challenges, and shortcomings of participatory monitoring and presents case studies, methods and tools as a quick reference guide. The first section of the book provides definitions on different concepts and terms related to participatory monitoring. The second section draws from field experiences to present lessons learnt on the formulation and implementation of participatory monitoring as well as on its implications. It concludes by presenting a matrix of relevant literature on the subject organised by theme (forest management, biodiversity conservation, wildlife management, human wellbeing, political processes and institutions, non-timber forest products and ecosystem services). Finally it provides recommendations for future directions in participatory monitoring.
