The importance of forests for the development of Indigenous Peoples in Costa Rica: Will REDD+ be a help or a hindrance?
As REDD+ is likely to influence the use of forest resources by local communities it is important to consider the role that these resources play in community development. This case study examines the role of forest resources and associated payments for environmental services in the development of Indigenous Peoples in Costa Rica, focusing on the territory of the Cabecar-Tayni. It highlights the need for the establishment of equitable REDD+ policies, that enable Indigenous communities in Costa Rica to continue to use forest resources for development.
