Understanding the relationship between extraction, territory, inequality/inequity and conflict in the Bolivian Chaco

Download
Conflicts over extractive industry have emerged as one of the most visible and potentially explosive terrains for struggles over territory, distribution and inequality in Andean countries. This paper explores these relationships in Bolivia focusing on the the types of inequality and inequity that emerge in the presence of extractive industries, and how these interact and combine with the territorialising projects of state, sub-national elites and indigenous actors. The conceptual argument is explored with reference to Bolivia and through a specific discussion of the consequences of natural gas extraction in the department of Tarija.
