Views on issues relating to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities for the Development and Application of Methodologies for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries

This article first provides a background note on Indigenous Peoples and REDD, and argues that a well-designed framework for REDD will depend upon, among other things, equitable participation and distribution of benefits, including for Indigenous Peoples and local communities. It highlights that forest resources directly contribute to the livelihoods of people living in extreme poverty and indirectly supports the natural environment that nourishes agriculture and food supplies. Therefore it is stressed that REDD, if not done well, has the potential to marginalise Indigenous Peoples and local communities. Following this, the article sets out a number of guiding principles on REDD, Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
